Great suggestions, Cheryl.
And case in point, just tonight I had a guy order a "Stoli Martini with two
olives". I went to work and stirred it in my tin, strained it into a cocktail
glass. He seemed to like it well enough but when I asked him if he would like
another he said, "Sure, but on the rocks, please." As I was making this drink
I asked him, "Do you always drink your martinis on the rocks?"
"Yes."
"Okay. Next time you should ask for it that way because pretty much every bar
is going to default to a martini served up."
He wasn't complaining and he took my suggestion well, but I was still
surprised that he ordered it the way he did and actually expected to get his
drink in a rocks glass over ice.
A side note to Ethanol (if you're still reading): I guess what it comes down
to is that you know what a Martini is and if you just ask for "a Martini" you
know what you're getting...but I don't know that you know if you come into my
bar. I get lots of folks who clearly don't know the ins and outs of Martinis
so I can't very well just hand them a stirred well gin (or even Sapphire) and
hope for the best. It could be someone in the biz ordering the drink (such as
yourself) or it could be a cocktail newb trying to branch out and try
something classy for the first time.
