Actually I'm a "house brew" kind of guy.  But given the popularity of vodka 
martinis I'd say that one should at least specify if it's vodka or gin.  And 
since it's a Martini, as opposed to a Cape Cod or Gin and Tonic, I'd say that 
specifying a preferred product is appropriate.  Martinis I do up and with an 
olive by default, but I don't see anything Nilesish (Niles Crane from 
"Frasier" - he would order the coffee you're talking about) about being 
specific in your preferences.  A Martini is a bond of trust between a 
bartender and a patron; it's a drink that people tend to be very particular 
about how they like them prepared and I don't have a problem with that.  Skoff 
if you will, but I think a well made Martini is more deserving of a list of 
specs than a cup of coffee.
