Sounds like the way I would choose to drink a manhattan, I do understand the 
addition of Maraschino liqueur or syrup, it does add an interesting additional 
flavour to the mix. When someone orders a Manhattan at work I would usuall add 
a dash of marashino syrup to sweeten the Bourbon a little. Regular folk just 
cant handle unsweetened cocktails!
