I thought that what we were talking about was pretentious classiness, and 
other such "arguments", and not actually about the taste. 

The Long Island is not about the blend of different flavours combining to 
produce a truly sublime unity, it is about "dude, this drink has 4/5 white 
spirits, we are gonna get so trashed, like totally!!!".

Rum & Coke/ Cuba Libre, is about the taste of rum, with citrusy lime, plus the 
sweetness of Cola. A "Cola Daiquiri" it might not be, but the Cuba Libre is an 
honest drink. Spirit and mixer with garnish.

When you talk about muddling lime wedges in a Cuba Libre that is when you 
cross the lime into pretenciousness.

The Gin Martini as it is made today, reminds me of an Old-Fashioned without 
sugar or bitters, rather than a Gin and Vermouth Cocktail.
