I agree with you, am pretty anal about my garnishes, pimento facing up, etc. I 
also like my garnishes to add something to the drink, as well to be a 
conversation piece. Does this mean that you get a fruit salad with a cocktail 
hidden somewhere in there? no. But first thing's first it should be visually 
pleasing, having contrasting colors, red garnishes for green drinks, and so 
on. Secondly I think they should compliment the drink in flavor. That doesn't 
mean be a slice of the main flavoring agent in the drink. Just my opinion that 
variety is the slice of life, and life ain't a slice of lemon. (unless you 
need that last piece of lemon to finish the drink, in which case carry on.)
