Swirling the mixing tin is not stirring, in fact, you may have hit on a new 
way to prepare cocktails.

I was always taught to stir a martini 7 times in one direction only. Either 
that or run your hands down the twist in the barspoon 3 times to turn the 
spoon at the base for the correct amount of stirring.

I must admit that where i am from, martini's are few and far between, so i 
havent had as much experience as others here.
