I worked (until a week ago, when I moved out to sunny Palo Alto, California) 
at the Nassau Inn in Princeton, NJ, which gets a lot of foreign visitors. I've 
definitely noticed that about the english and it definitely drives me up the 
wall. The germans do it too, though. I once had a guy tell me in very forceful 
tones that he had a "big order" and was I ready. I was assuming 10-15 drinks, 
and the maximum number I can remember without having to doublecheck is about 
8-10 at once, even when the bar is busy, so I steeled myself. And he ordered 
four drinks. Hey, that's the business. Get all types.

I'm kind of happy that I'm getting a little break from professional 
bartending, though I also kind of need the money.
