no table service in PUBS... we are au fait with table service in most 'bars'
and the like. There is an arguement that table service is another way of
facilitating sales without paying properly (ie make the waiter rely on tips)
and all about ease and hidden cost?
I have worked in both NYC and the UK ( as well as talked to and trained
bartenders all over the world) and drinking habits and catering are
different... in some countries catering is a respected profession so tips and
tipping are unnecessary (as most american bartenders are probably familiar
with to their chagrin)
How many drinks in an order can you memorise? I will often look at the
bartender and judge this as I find it anoying to have a bartender put that
hard-put-upon or pissed off face when I don't order the whole round in one and
then have the cheek to come back half way through and ask what the rest was...
on the whole tho' again I hold my hand up and say we drink and order badly as
a nation and it shames me... but at least we don't order 1-800 Fuk me up or
Alien Urine samples etc etc ;)
aw
