Very astute Sir, indeed the recipe was borrowed from Colonel Samuels, he
confided it to me whilst we enjoyed our dinner at the 2002 Kentucky Bourbon
Festival Gala dinner. I almost feel ashamed to admit that we make ours with
Buffalo Trace not Makers (not that Buffalo is a bad product but out of respect
I should really use Makers) We also stock the green wax Makers* but between
me, you and the rest of the global community I think ours is a little better,
and its infinitly better than the Early Times Julep Mix. The Green Makers has
a slighly Wrigleys kinda flavour if you know what I mean?
For my money the best writing on the Julep is in Irvin S Cobbs "Own Recipe
Drinks Book" from 1932(I think) its the most eloquently written cocktail book
the World has seen. Also Ted Sauciers Bottoms Up has an extensive chapter on
Juleps, and lots of pictures of pretty girls!
I'll post some extracts tommorrow if I can remeber to bring the books in to
work.
Cheers!
*The green Makers doesn't have the word Bourbon anywhere on it because
obviously you are not allowed to add flavours to bourbon! What would you call
this category- Flavoured American whisk(e)ys?
