So far most of my experience with mixing has been at home with the help of a 
good book, and the internet. The nice thing about this is that I can make 
anything I want as long as I have the ingreedients. The bad thing is that I 
can make anything I want as long as I have the ingreedients.

My cousin recently hit drinking age and invited me along to the bar. I 
figured, great! I mix for myself at home, know quite a few drinks...should be 
great. But unfortunately I didn't know what the BAR knew how to make.

My favorite drink is a REAL Daiquiri, which of course the bar didn't know how 
to make (I was got a few laughs as most thought I was trying to order a 
strawberry 'daiquiri'). I expected that much, and then tried to explain the 
drink (rum, lime, syrup), and got a quick answer of "I can't make that".

That night I settled with LIIT's (horribly sweet), rum and Coke, and whatever 
round of shots was ordered that night, while my cousin (female) spent the 
night on Sea Breazes, Bay Breazes, and any other mixes of vodka/rum, schnapps 
and fruit juice.

While I have no problem with the drinks I ended up with, I really wanted 
something more satisfying but didn't want to try again and end up with another 
"Daiquiri moment".

The major dillema here: who would know what to order? The bartenders weren't 
exactly reccomend-a-drink types and it isn't as if a real bar has a menu of 
"the drinks we can make".

So HERE's the real question!

What are some good, respectable drinks, that ANY BAR--be it a family 
restuaraunt, a club, or a corner bar--would know. Webtender has its lists, but 
they're based too much on the numbers, and mostly the fruit or juice or 
fuk-u-up noveltys.

By respectable I mean simple, easy, not juiced and sweetened to hell, but not 
as hard hitting as a Martini or a Manhattan.

Give me a good highball, a good short drink, a good long drink, and even a 
shooter or two. What do the forums drink?
