3:2:1 is my 'golden ratio' for margaritas and sidecars as well.  

I'll confess that in my earlier days I stooped to using simple syrup in my 
sidecars.  Still, that felt like cheating to me and I tried to work out the 
problem, realized I wasn't pouring enough cointreau which is what provides the 
sweetness to balance the lemon juice.  As soon as I increased the dose on that 
it became a much better cocktail with no need for added sugar.
