I think the next trend is almost always determined by what the product
companies produce. It's in their best interest to produce a new product that
appeals to the masses because after all, they are in the biz to make money.
Bottomline.
Cross the suggested use of a new product with our (us, the bartenders)
imaginations and Voila! a new trend is born. The Martini craze (presenting
shooters that you chug of yesterday into elegant Martini glasses that we sip
today) started when Absolut came out with the first infused vodka called
Absolut Citron. And as we all know, many many companies jumped on the band
wagon after that. Martini menus and bars popped up everywhere after we took
the country/world by storm with our tweaked Cosmopolitan.
I've cross referenced popular drinks and debut dates of products through the
years and they seem to match up. Peach Schnapps in the early 80's grew into
the Sex on the Beach craze, Baileys (1974) helped form the Mudslide craze and
all the cousin drinks from that, Sour Pucker skyrockted Sour Apple Martini's
(late 90's) and the spin-offs from that, etc.
Just my 2 cents,
Cheryl
