bartenders in wetherspoons can make up to £5.50 p/hr (better than a lot of 
london bars and a couple of top end venues i could name) plus upto £100 extra 
a month, depending on sales and stock. 18 months ago i was working in a 
wetherspoons in a great team, having fun, getting enough drinks bought for me 
to drink all night! our managers would let us take bottles of beer or wine 
home that had been bought for us (Once I started collecting shots of Hennesey 
Rare cognac and walked away with a new bottle, within 3 days. needless to say 
i didn't walk very far with it as we ended up finshing it, the same night.) 
also managers are sent on training courses and required to pass various tests 
to move up management levels within the company. my old wetherspoons' pub 
manager couple (on the outskirts of london) would walk away with a combined 
package of £60k a year. how many other bar managers do you know on that kinda 
money??

of course i agree that your particular experience seems a bit silly and at 
times common sense should prevail, but i reccomend you know your facts and 
ensure you opinions are based on something substanstial before you make 
peanut-monkey comments. because thats where i learnt the basics! came across 
products and people that got me interested in the whole thing, understood the 
importance of hard work/teamwork/personality/multi-tasking, learnt to deal 
with difficult people (anger-management more like) and if it means i was a 
monkey back then, then i'm a monkey now too!
