Dear D,

I totally agree with you that sometimes 'service' gets in the way of enjoying
yourself... often totally redundantly (sniffing the cork is a total waste of
time as I am sure we are all aware).

But sometimes it is necessary and sometimes it is enjoyable and adds to the
experience. It is a fine line but one that cocktails use to their advantage...
the tinkle of ice is an auditory pleasure that enhances the drink rather than
the spindle blender etc etc.

What I found in Japan was that the formality was so freakish that it became a
true Experience as was the Karaoke and the drinking in a bar that only fits 7
people in... it made me think that bars can be like restaurants rather than
the fast food joints we often put up with here in the West...the starched
white jackets and 'hosting' deference was nice and a real trip.

I like silver service sometimes not all times... I like down and dirty bars
sometimes.. not all times... and if I get a chance to go back I am on it like
a shot... with Ms Charming on my arm!

I would suggest that Japan with its bowing and formality will not be to your
liking but you have to realise it is their thing and respect and revel in it...

cheers

aw

ps am not being narky here as I hope nor are you but japan does intrigue me
and I feel ocasionally the need to defend my liking of it to other clumsy
round eyed western barbarians...
