I didn't comment with regard to whether or not you earned your way, once you 
got your first gig, while lacking actual experience.

My point of view:  I am a firm believer of not fooling those that interview 
or hire you.  Honesty is number one with tending (liquor stock and cash 
handling) and therefore have worked in and promote an environment of checking 
those credentials provided by a candidate for hire.  Great if one maintains a 
johnny on the spot, straight from the hip confidence, but that alone will not 
get them hired where I work.  We simply cannot operate effectively if we do 
hire those sorts, and that has been taught to any that screen or hire from 
simple experience of living through a horrible shift with one who is dragging 
the whole team down and not pulling their weight as a result of their falsely 
bragged about expereince.  We're just not an establishment that has the luxury 
of picking fresh, new, inexperienced folks.

Sure there are "Cinderella" stories, all kinds of them, yours inclusive.  To 
take this analogy in a different direction.  Being a team player (with 
motivation to be noticed to be promoted to barstaff), I worked my station as a 
server and jumped behind the bar to barback as we lacked any at that point on 
our schedules and did what I could to help out when they were in the weeds.  I 
learned quickly and then, one day a bartender never showed up and I found that 
this "glass slipper" of bartending shoes to fit quite nicely, as did 
management since I've been on the schedule ever since.


Without taking the focus of this discussion to the throw in "personality" 
aspect into this....
