At the time, they didn't confiscate the liscense, now they give it back to you 
with a hole punched thru it at the DMV.  I was fortunate when it came to 
liability and the law, my Father is a retired New York State Police Captain. 
He showed me things like cross examining bone structure thru the top and side 
to side's and such on people's faces in comparision to their pictures. Things 
like that have helped.
