In oHIo, they take those away and destroy them when you get your new one.

You have to provide valid, current ID hence them denying your entry since it 
was expired.

I worked where the Federal ATF (now the TTB) and State Liquor Control were on 
our island ten days in a row.  We bartenders, bar owners and security staff 
were really pushed to the test and got very intimate with our local laws.  
There were many violations too!  (Our bar held tough and violation free :0).

To be safe and sure about your own State I'd advise a visit to:  
http://www.gettips.com and register.  (It is free).  There you can see what 
forms of ID are valid for that state, territory and even some of the provinces 
of Canada.

One may be of legal age, but they need to carry and maintain acceptable proof 
of same.  (Meaning unaltered original govermental issued identification -- not 
laminating or perfectly sealed lamination if that is original to the 
"document").

One evening while I worked on that island I had my license in my pocket and 
didn't carry a purse.  It slipped out somewhere and I had to spend my next off 
afternoon boating to and from the mainland to the closest license bureau for a 
duplicate despite everyone on that island knew me and that I was of legal age 
to consume, purchase and sell alcohol.

I am not going to end up with a criminal record, fined a huge amount of money 
or serve jail time because I accepted a wrong form of identification so 
someone can get their drink on.
