Are there any other good rules of thumb I should know?

Number one rule as a bartender is BE NICE.  Kill the patrons, and yer arrogant 
boss with kindness.  When someone asks for their favorite drink in a vulgar 
way you never heard of -- their right! Ask them what it is and give it to 
them.  If you know of a alternate, less vulgar name,  you may give them the 
correct name afterwards, politely --though over time you won't even bother.  
Give the customer what they want.  In your current location culutre shock 
sounds like the biggest problem.  In the business however, people are your 
only concern.  Don't be over concerned with Co2, glasses, ice( ok...maybe 
ice...) and supplies.  Repeat business is essential to a bar's survival and 
therefore your job.  
Also, in North America I think its safe to say a bartender's salary is pretty 
low for all the work you do and crap you will put up with. Tips can be not 
only rewarding, but essential. Always remember that people are usually out to 
be entertained, your role is the "Happy man who pours the drinks".  Don't 
forget that...and let all that other stuff just bounce off..
