In Mexico, limes are so cheap, they might as well be free - and in many parts 
of the country, they are free as someone nearby surely has a tree full of 
them. I would have to say that it was originally used as a simple flavor 
enhancer - add salt, hot sauce, and a couple other sauces and you have a 
Michelada, a very popular beer cocktail in Mexico. Also, Mexican's don't just 
drink their Corona with lime, they also drink just about every other beer with 
lime too - Sol (which is nearly as popular as Corona), Tecate, Indio etc. 
Actually, Mexicans put lime on EVERYTHING. 

Coca Cola actually had a funny commercial running down in Mexico not too long 
ago promoting Coke with Lime, with people putting lime in their beer, on their 
chips, on their salads, on their hair, on their door knob you name it - it was 
pretty funny and very accurate.
