Maraschino is a bittersweet, clear liqueur flavored with Maraska cherries,
which are grown in northern Italy (near Trieste), Croatia and Slovenia. It has
an almond-like flavor, which comes from the crushed pits of the cherries.

Maraschino liqueur has no connection (other than historical) with so-called
maraschino cherries.

As I said before, Maraschino liqueur is a million miles or more from the taste
of the syrup used to store Marascino cherries and this should not be used as a
substitute.
