this post rests on the principle that there is a "right way" and correct
answers to all bartending Qs.
The more books you have then the more options/stories/explanations that you
have... you also get a historical perspective as well (as in a man who learns
nothing is bound to repeat their errors
ie through books I can show a progression from the Martinez to the Martini to
the dry Martini and back it up with evidence.
Also strange oddities can be picked up... I found a book t'other day from the
50's with a Canadian Blackberry Fix (2 canadian, 1 lemon, .75 gomme built on
crushed ice with blackberry brandy floated on the top and garnisheed with a
blackberry and a lemon slice)... sounds like a bramble to me but 30 years
before Dick 'invented it'.
I honestly believe you can learn something from any book if you read the whole
thing. Errors are present in many but unless you have The Knowledge as opposed
to hearsay or merely one point of view then how do you pick them up?
