Vodka brand upsets Norway
Norwegian liquor producer Arcus is crying foul over an apparent effort by the
makers of vodka giant Smirnoff to try marketing itself as Norwegian.
At issue, reports newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, is a new brand of Smirnoff
vodka that sports a blue, Arctic-looking label with the name of the vodka
written as "Norsk," which in Norwegian actually means "Norwegian."
Smirnoff officials say, no, the name actually is "Nørsk," which means nothing,
other than that it has a slash running through the "o," just like the
Norwegian letter "ø."
Does this mean that Smirnoff want their vodka to be pronounced "nersk" as that
is how it would have to be pronounced if their vodka is not really called
Norsk, as most people would assume from reading the word.
Cheers!
