It could be a different Tom & Jerry which Thomas talks about. There needs to 
be prove about the Jerry Thomas Tom & Jerry being invented before he did. I 
agree that it is suspicious though but there could be different versions, not? 
It is possible that Thomas only hijacked the name because of it's popularity 
and because it resembled his own personal name? There is no recipe found is it?
Maybe I am missing something but what is/was the status of that drink? Isn't 
it just a kind of hot Toddy? Why are there special mugs and shops for a 
regular drink?
