I'm with Beans on this one, must be a happy medium. I tend at two places in 
town, One a brand new sports concept resturant, the other a local dive. The 
sports bar is a huge U shaped bar, designed by someone with no tending 
experience (read: bad setup) and no tip out from wait staff unless they "feel 
like it". Place is always packed as there are no other sit down resturants 
within 10 miles of this place, yet tips are lousy and split between 3 tenders.
Dive bar does much less business in terms of volume yet tips are more than 
double in a shift. Both have their problems with management.
I am also a network technician and still do it on the side, but love the 
flexibility of the bar biz (still raising a husband and a teenager). I am 
lucky enough to have great insurance through my husband so my money tends to 
go into the house but would have no problem affording it if i needed to, or a 
Roth IRA for that matter.

I find this is like asking if people marry for money or love, the two concepts 
are not mutually exclusive.Life is all about balance.
