I've been living outside of the US for about two years now, and yes, it's as 
easy as crossing back over to the states when your tourist visa expires, then 
crossing back over. In Mexico, you can stay up to 180 days on a tourist visa, 
before having to leave. I've literally crossed the border on foot, stopped for 
a cup of coffee, and walked crossed back over and got another 180 days. Panama 
was the same, though they only gave me 90 days, then you had to head to the 
immigration office for another 90 days. Overstaying your visa isn't very grave 
though, typically a per day fine (in mexico) or a per month fine (in panama) 
but it both cases it was never really that expensive.
