You want to stick with the Islands that are US territory like the St. Croix 
that was mentioned. St. John  is extremely small and St. Thomas would have 
more action and opportunity then Croix or John. Puerto Rico is your next 
choice.
When you go to other places there's a certain...ummmmm...I can't think of a 
good word...ummm..you'll get attitudes of, "why are you here taking our jobs 
when you're from big rich America".

As for how to ditch eveything, well, ya just do it. Have about $3000 saved, 
updated ID's, fill one suitcase or back pack,  and buy a plane ticket. Once 
there you can check out the newspapers for jobs (or go online to get a better 
idea now) and stay in hotels until you find one then find a place for you to 
live.
