Hmmm.....in your situation, I would ask if I could come in during quieter 
hours just to familiarize yourself with where things are, etc (make sure you 
mention that you don't want any pay for this).  Not only would this help you a 
lot in terms of felling comfortable with your surroundings, but it would score 
brownie points with your boss, showing that you're really into the job and 
taking the initiative to be the best that you can be.
