We tested this numerous times with popular multi ingredient cocktails. We had 
experienced bartenders and drinkers try several drinks with both cheap "well" 
liquor and the good stuff. We made drinks like kamikazi's, screw drivers, 
tequila sunrises, long island iced tea and a few others. About 80% of the time 
they could not tell the good stuff from the cheap stuff.

In my opinion drinks with concentrated juices like OJ and sweet and sour over 
power the benefits of more expensive alcohol. While I teach upselling, I find 
it a waste on certain drinks. FYI the cheap stuff we used in most cases was 
McCormick's (sp).
