As far as real life goes... I had a couple of European gents in my bar the other night who requested I dunk the frosty glasses in water before pouring their Hoegarden. (one of my favorite beers, incidentally) So I guess it's not just a beer snob/marketing thing. Unless these guys were champion beer drinkers... ;-) Who knows.
