Vanilla extract

Vanilla extract is made by steeping chopped vanilla beans in alcohol to extract the flavor, then aging the mixture for several months.

According to FDA standards, pure vanilla extract must contain 13.35 ounces of vanilla beans per gallon during extraction and 35 percent alcohol.
