I'd have to agree, most of the people that tend bar usually start in pretty 
poor dive bars, or worse yet, beer-bars.  I am just about to move out of a 
small town where nepatism and "knowing people" are usually the only ways to 
get a job.  I was lucky, I met the owner because I had a reputation of giving 
great backrubs (which she has a weak spot for).  When one of the bartenders 
didn't show up for a shift, I offered to start working and I was hired the 
next week.  Even then I had to work the worst nights of the week for the 
restaurant lounge for a long time before I moved into working the nightclub.  
Most of the bartenders we have working started out as bouncers or waitresses.  
Me and one other guy are the only ones who started with tending bar there, and 
both of us were the exceptions to the rule.
