Hi Frazier,

I think I have solved our little mystery. After a bit of research I believe an
‘Amber Moon’ is a ‘Prairie Oyster’, with Vodka. It kind of makes sense as a
pick-me-up. I managed to find these two variations, below. I’d say the second
one is closest to an Amber Moon if you swap the brandy for vodka. However I
suspect that a genuine Amber Moon may have something else in it. I can imagine
something like Angostura bitters working well (?).

Tell me what you think.

Prairie Oyster with a hint of hair of the dog!
1 shot of Olive oil
1-2 tablespoons of tomato ketchup
1 raw egg yolk (don’t break this)
salt, pepper
Tabasco
Worcestershire sauce
vinegar or lemon juice

The olive oil acts as a liver and gall bladder flush. (It’s so effective, it
can even dissolve gall bladder stones!) The raw egg contains an amino acid
called N-acetyl-cysteine. This is one of the building blocks of a natural
compound called glutathione. In the body, this acts as a major minesweeper
clearing out toxins from alcohol and cigarette smoke. Ironically, when you
drink, you lower levels of this nutrient. So, building it up again is a good
idea - especially since a much-quoted study into hangover cures by New
Scientist magazine showed NAC was the best antidote of all! The tomato ketchup
provides bioflavanoids or vitamin P. These give vegetables and fruits their
colours and are superb antioxidants in their own right - which means they
boost the immune system and again, clear out those damaging toxins. If you
can’t get going without the hair of the dog, add a splash of vodka - which
contains less congeners (or additives) than any other alcoholic drink. This
explains why you get less of a hangover if you stick to this spirit. If you’re
in a rush and don’t have time to mix a Prairie Oyster, boiling vinegar and
inhaling the steam will at least get rid of that hangover headache.

The Prairie Oyster
(In Thunderball, James Bond admits to having one of these about once a week)

    * 1 whole egg
    * 1½ oz. brandy
    * Dash of Worcestershire sauce
    * Dash of Tabasco® sauce (optional)

      Carefully crack the egg and place inside a highball glass (the yolk
should be unbroken). Add the other ingredients. When drinking, the yolk should
be swallowed whole. Warning: raw eggs may contain salmonella.
