The first reference to the Blood and Sand is from the 1930 edition of the 
Savoy Cocktail Book; the time line is:

1) Blood and Sand, the book, Vicente Blasco Ibanez (1919).
2) The Film with Rudolph Valentino (1922).
3) Savoy Cocktail Book (1930)
4) The Film with Tyrone Power (1941).

The book was originally titled "Sangre Y Arena" and referred to the Matador's 
Arena.

Okay, what is the deal with the Blood and Sand? Personally I don't think it is 
a classic cocktail, as it has been mostly dormant then been revived (by Gary 
Regan or Dale DeGroff I assume).

I don't see how a drink like the Blood and Sand wouldn't taste okay; this is 
in sharp contrast to how someone people describe it, as if it could never look 
good to drink.

Does anyone have any more information on the Blood and Sand?
