Here's my 2 cents: 
First I've never walked in and filled out a cookie cutter application that can 
be bought at Office Depot by the book full. I'm sure this is the standard type 
you have been filling out. Yes, I fill out the ap. but I always have a resume 
stapled to the ap and if at all possible a picture. If you don't have a pic to 
give away then find a pic, go to Kinko's and ask for a color copy. Or you can 
ask for a black and white copy (those are nice). When I say black and white I 
don't mean the 3cent self service B&W. I mean that you have to ask someone 
behind the counter for a B&W on one of the expensive machines. It should cost 
50 cents.  Set the pic in the bottom left or right corner. Use this copy to 
use as a cover sheet.
When you attach a resume, a manager tends to look overlook a lot of stuff on 
the ap.

And yes, the manager is rolling his/her eyes when they read that you went to 
Bartender School. My advice is to leave this out. I use to be a manager, trust 
me. If the certification doesn't fit anywhere, then leave it out unless it's 
required in your state. I don't know if anyone has told you, but just because 
you took a week class and got a certificate doesn't make you a bartender.

Personally, if you didn't have any experience, I wouldn't look twice at your 
ap/resume.  It  would be thrown in the trash.  If you didn't have experience 
and were willing to take any position with a straight forward positive team 
worker attitude, I might possibly give you a chance starting as a 
server/busser/barback so that you could prove yourself to me. 

The big thing everybody overlooks is getting your foot in the door. Once in 
open your eyes and ears and take it all in like a sponge. Make friends with 
everybody especially the bartenders. Bartenders get sick, they go oon vacation 
and someone has to fill in....then you have your foot behind the bar.

Average time to get where you want to be....I would say.........6 months. It 
all just depends on who's already working there that has been waiting too.  At 
TGIFridays you have to be a server for a year! Even if you have 20 years 
experience behind the bar when you walk in.
