

Ach, this is just wrong on so many levels.
You have suggested that lemon juice is optional - it isn't. It's an integral
part of the drink, and it wouldn't be an Aviation without it.
The drink was originally made with Crème Yvette, which hasn't been produced in
more than half a century (although I understand some companies are now
starting to re-make it). As such, unless you've a bottle of this lying around,
it's impossible to faithfully recreate the drink. However, Crème de Violette
is a vague approximation of this, but must be used incredibly judiciously,
otherwise the drink just ends up tasting of lavender.
Anyway, my point is that an Aviation can still be an Aviation provided it has
gin, maraschino and lemon juice. But that it can't be an Aviation without
lemon juice.
