John Martin, a smirnoff promoter included this drink in one of his promotions.
He began his campaign in the 1940's-50's. When he introduced the cocktail to
Texas, the wildcatters would stir this drink with their screwdrivers from
their tool belts. (it's worth noting this is a version from "the essential
cocktail" by Dale DeGroff)
Another story places this drink around the same time, but different places.
Some believe this drink was invented by refinery workers overseas who had
nothing to stir the drink with, so they used their screwdrivers.
Nearly every story indicates this drink was named after the tool used to
prepare it. Although, they all may derive from the same story, then again
history is written by the victor.
Cheers
