Hi victoric,
as far as I´m able to understand your question: yes,there are big differences 
between kirsch, (black forest) kirschwasser on one side and cherry heering, 
edel (if you mean eckes edelkirsch) on the other. The first group consists of 
fruit brandies, the others are liqueurs. If you want to read more about white 
fruit brandies, try http://www.americanimbiber.com/whitebrandy/ . If you want 
to substitute cherry heering, you might try another cherry liqueur. If are 
unable to find heering or a good bottle of kirsch in your country - if you 
want, I´ll send you some.
