For Another take on this term: One Satruday night I happened to have off from
the bar and just stayed home to watch TV. There was a good program on
Prohibition on the Discovery channel. According to this program, the term
'86' came from the address of a famous Prohibition pub/speakeasy in NYC where
a lot of writers and other literary types of the day hung out to drink. The
place was/is called 'Chumley's Pub' and it was/is located at a street address
of '86 something or other street. When the G-Men would come sniffing about,
all the liquor would go into hiding, and, for some reason, the term for
getting rid of the evidence was referred to as '86ing'. Granted, I don't know
if this is the real story either, but it makes for a great bit of trivia to
share with your bar guests.
