The usual chain of command is: Busser to Server to Barback to Bartender,
however, it is absolutely possible to get a barback position without
experience. One option is to apply to some catering companies and express
interest in getting experience barbacking. Catering companies are usually
hiring all of the time because of the high turn over rate. Once you add that
to your resume, you will have a better chance at getting the job. Barbacking
is mostly manual labor but you must also develop the instincts of anticipating
the bartenders needs. Those instincts only develop with experience.
