I work in a small nightclub, behind the bar. I've been there for a year, which
is something as we have a high turnover of staff. I never intended to work in
hospitality and am still learning but, now that I'm here, I rather enjoy it
and have been thinking about a possible step up into bar management. The
problem is, I am not sure my boss takes me seriously.
Bar managers are hard to find it seems and we have been through a few in
twelve months. The last couple of times the position became vacant, despite
the fact that he is aware of my interest, my boss has overlooked me and
brought in somebody new. Please don't misunderstand me. I genuinely admire
my employer and all of the managers he has hired in my time there have been
great to work with. This last time around when I asked if he might consider
offering me a trial until he found someone permanent, he simply said, "No."
Fair enough - As far as he is concerned, I'm sure I have a lot to prove and I
don't find that unreasonable.
I am new to the business and therefore I lack some finesse but, I'm like a
snowball! Learning and putting it all together as I go. I work hard, I ask
questions and I share what I know. Every week I have a day shift where I take
deliveries, rotate stock, clean the club from top to bottom (disco balls and
all!)and take care of the smaller maintenance issues as they arise. As a
consequence of this, I know the place like the back of my hand. I know how to
open, I know how to close. My stats on up-selling and tips are always the
highest. My point in mentioning these things is purely to illustrate what
makes me think I am capable.
I'd like some advice on how to build a little more credibility for myself. Of
course a key ingredient is time. Aside from the obvious things, what can I
work on or consider or begin to do in order to demonstrate key requirements to
my boss?
Thanks.
