Here's the cool thing...you can make any clear spirit black with black food
coloring. I have this in a coupla my books, but the basic recipe is (in your
case) a bottle of light rum and 5 black food coloring drops. Since 2007 black
food coloring has been available in the spice aisle of all grocery stores in
America. Cool/simple things to do with it would be a Rum Screwdriver ( ice OJ
then slowly layer the black rum on top...or you can just mix it all together
to make the while drink black). You can also do cranberry juice. Want an all
black drink? Then take some flavored rum, make it black then add a clear mixer
like Sprite. These are very simple and cost effective ideas.
If you want to get creative then think of "black" things. Black rose petals,
black licorice, etc. You could make a clear drink with rum then cut the two
end of a black licorice stick to use as a straw. Or use black licorice string
to coil around inside a drink.
You can also do a drink with coffee, chocolate, blackberries, black tea, etc.
It all depends on how simple or complex you want to get.
It sounds like coal miners aren't gonna be hip to cocktail trends so you can
stay simple. Personally, it sounds like they would dig something like....this
is off the top of my head...Bacardi Razz (made black with coloring), peach
schnapps, and cranberry juice. I would imagine they would like this. Something
fruity yet dry.
But I think the most dramatic presentation would be simply a flavored Bacardi
rum and Sprite with black ice cubes (so they look like chunks of coal). Simply
take ice cube trays, fill with water then add black food coloring. you'll have
to stir. A clear drink with black coal-like ice cubes would be coal...oops I
mean cool.
Just my 2 cents.
