It sounds like you have an experimental focus. In that case trial and error
works the best to learn the game.

Concerning the particular questions.
- Everclear is also neutral but it has a higher alcohol content so you need
less everclear to reach the same alcoholic boost effect. This results in a
stronger whiskey flavour because of less dilution with neutral liquid.
- Banana liqueur might work well since it adds a sweet sensation both by
increasing fruity aroma and sugar content. This sweet sensation might make the
whisky more palatable to some tastes.
Also, it could be used as a sort of volume button to turn up the flavor
intensity and make it less flat. But, be sure to keep the flavour balanced.
Balanced flavours are often more preferred (although it is complex because it
is personal/learnt/subjective what is balanced and what is not).
Besides banana liqueur you might also think about juices or fruit
concentrates. Their acids might provide a good natural type of mouthfeel. The
high alcohol and sugars, together with cheap liquor, might taste unnatural.
Especially banana can contain such flavors which resemble paint thinner or
nail remover (acetic acid esters).
- Your first question (what mixes good with...) is very broad and you should
experiment with this yourself. Your thoughts on whiskey can already be good.
You should dig up recipes from websites and books and look for similar
combinations. In that way you can decipher common patterns in drinks and use
them with your ingredients.
