Closing your register

I'm new to bartending and sort of afraid to ask this question: when the night
is over, what is the procedure with counting out and closing your register?
How do you know if you're short? And should you leave anything in the
register/cash drawer for the next days shift?
I understand (I think) that you count and tally the total but confused by what
happens after that.
Everything helps. Thanks!
