FWIW, it was a "Vesper" he was drinking in that chapter ;-)

Common consensus has come around to saying a Vodka martini is just fine 
shaken if that's what you want (IE, cold vodka).
A classic Gin martini is always stirred.
And "Bruising" is a myth. 
(or if not, just an odd mistaken euphemism for over-diluting)
