In America, it's common practice to add a 15%-18% to parties of 6-8 or more
(but it's always listed in fine print on the menu). In tourist many areas,
some places do charge a % for any order. I was at a hotel bar recently and saw
15% added to my tab. At another place a bartender told me that if they heard
an accent that management gave them permission to automatically add 15%.
Some bartenders will take advantage of the 6-8 people policy mentioned above.
The % is supposed to be added if there is "one" group check. But they will add
the % even if everyone pays individually.

The Last Barman Poem by Tom Cruise in the 1988 film, Cocktail
I am the last barman poet,
I see America drinking the fabulous cocktails I make,
Americans getting stinky on something I stir or shake,
The Sex on the Beach, the schnapps made from peach,
The Velvet Hammer, The Alabama Slammer,
I make things with juice and froth,
The Pink Squirrel, the 3-toed Sloth,
I make drinks so sweat and snazzy,
The Iced Tea, the Kamikazi,
The Orgasm, the Death Spasm,
The Singapore Sling,
The Dingaling.
America you've just been devoted to every flavor I got,
But if you want to got loaded,
Why don't you just order a shot?
Bar is open.
