There's a lot of different ways to learn bartending, and this forum has more
than it's fair share of elitists that truly look down on bartending schools. I
personally think a bartending school is what you make of it. If you're a lazy,
slow, incompetent person and you go to a bartending school, you're going to
come out being a lazy, slow, incompetent bartender! However, if you're a fast
learner, hard worker that takes initiative, you're going to make the most out
of what you learned, and probably end up being a pretty good bartender.
I think a lot of people come out of a bartending school thinking that the
school is going to hand them a job on a plate. This isn't the case, even after
finishing the school, you'll need to work your ass off to find a job -
however, at the very least you'll have the bulk of the knowledge required to
be able to step behind the pine.
Obviously bartending is a hands-on type of trade. You can't learn many of the
important things you need to know through a book, or even BarSim (although
it's good for memorizing recipes, and a few other basics). A bartending school
is a decent option for alot of people that don't have the option of working
their way up.
