I've been tending for a lot of years in a few different states.  There are 
different laws regarding this, but the standard seems to be (at least in CO 
and IL) that you claim 8% of what you ring on the register...I have generally 
worked for places that just take that percentage out of my check for me so it 
has been fairly easy to deal with.  If you work in a little neighborhood place 
that pays "under the table", you aren't technically working and that can 
present issues with apartments, car loans, etc.  As far as credit goes, if you 
keep yours good there should not be an issue.  It is an interesting question 
and I would like to see what everyone else has to say.
