I have to agree with Tom. Be honest with your boss first. If you show a
willingness to continue to learn, most decent bosses will give you the shot.
I Just took up bartending full time within the last year and I'm continuously
learning new techniques and drinks. I recommend that you get an idea of what
liquers you will be using and experiment with drinks. Use the "My Bar" section
of this site to get some great ideas.
In my opinion, one of the most important aspects of bartending is
repitition. Once you've made 4 or 5 "Tom Collinses" you will remember the
recipe. This is the best way to learn the most common drinks and as you work
a particular bar, people will order a particular local favorite and you will
eventually have that recipe memorized.
Most of all, don't worry to much. I was amazed at the patience that
customers showed me while I was beginning. A lot of them get a kick out of
explaining how they like their Cosmopolitan.
Work hard enough to be proficient but not so hard that it is no longer fun
for you.
  Rick

How do I pour? What is 'cl', 'oz' and 'pt'? How should I handle glassware?.
