I went to a bartending school in NYC, but after working for a bit as a
bartender & reading this board, I realized most employers look down upon
bartender school graduates. So now when I talk to people at my bar, I never
say I went to school for it, nor do I put it on my resume. The good thing
about the school for me was it taught me a lot about drinks, since I knew
nothing. And they also had student nights at local bars where students got a
chance to bartend for an hour.
In NYC it's hard to find a good gig, since many of them require 2yrs
experience. Check out craigslist as NYC has a lot of listings. You should
try barbacking first to get your foot in the door.
The good thing about the city is since everyhting is so close you can just
take an afternoon to visit a lot of bars & drop off resumes.
