Subject: No bartending experience. Bartending license really required in WI?
From: Fat Elvis

I live in Madison WI. I've been interested in becoming a bartender, but I
have no experience. I heard that this one bowling alley has a sports bar and
is cool with hiring unexperienced people, so I dropped in and asked if they
were hiring. The two people I talked to weren't sure if they were hiring
bartenders, but I took an application anyway.

On the application it has different sections for different positions to apply
to, one for bartending, which has boxes to check whether or not you have
1) bartending experience
2) Responsible bev server course
3) bartender's license
4) Grill experience

Does anyone have any idea what "Responsible bev server course" is referring
to? Are they talking about a bartending school or some kind of bs
bartending/alcohol responsibility course or what? I've heard from a lot of
people that most bars see bartending school as a joke, but if that's what
they're listing here then I assume they must be an exception...

Also, is it worth it to get a bartender's license? This site (the first link
below) seems to suggest that in wisconsin you need a license to serve
alcohol...is that really true? And this site (second link) has some
downloadable four hour $24 bartender's license exam lesson, but I can't tell
where/how you take the exam, and if it's online whether or not it's "official".

Anyone? Thanks for the help.
